On Wednesday 24th September we had a visit from a hot-air balloon! The Irish Balloon Championships were taking place in Waterford and a crew from Belfast, husband and wife team Robin and Edith Mercer, kindly gave us a big part of their day, not to mention their expertise and enthusiasm.
Because it was too windy to inflate the envelope, they set up the basket, complete with burners, in the school yard. Every single class from Junior Infants to 6th got to hear Robin’s talk about ballooning, a fantastic mixture of Science, Maths, Geography, Meteorology and FUN. Robin talked and demonstrated to eight separate class standards over a three hour period, ably assisted by Edith. We salute their stamina and their determination to ensure the same quality of experience to all of the different audiences on the day.
They commented on how well-behaved and interested all the children were and on their good attention and interesting questions. One of their favourites was, ‘What would happen if you landed on a turkey?’
Lots of great work is taking place in the classrooms on foot of this fantastic visit and we would like to extend a huge thank-you to Robin and to Edith for giving so generously of their time, energy, knowledge and love of ballooning to all the pupils and staff of Holy Cross School Tramore. We would also like to thank Oliver Lupton of the Waterford Balloon Club for arranging the visit for us.
We hope you enjoy the photographs from the day.
